What is the air quality in my town? We all want clean and pure air. The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles remind us that air quality can change for various reasons. Let’s learn about the components of our local air. Are there currently pollutants in the air? If so, what are the sources of these potential pollutants?

Let’s create an air sensor tool using an Arduino chip to test the air quality in the classroom and outdoors. We will also use an external air quality monitor to compare its data with the tool we build. Additionally, we’ll use an indoor air quality monitor and compare its results with the other tools.

It would be great to use online data from local air quality monitoring stations and see how our findings match theirs. Using the data we gather, we can discuss and try to determine the origins of any detected pollutants. If we identify pollutant sources, can the factories producing these pollutants adopt new manufacturing methods to reduce or eliminate them?

Finally, let’s take two additional steps:

1. Set up an air purifier in the classroom and measure the air quality after purification.

2. Record our findings, including the location and time, and send them to the EPA along with any questions or concerns.

This will be a valuable learning experience.

We hope to see you in the course!
